Small towns in Pennsylvania are a lot like a lot of small towns in the Midwest. The jobs have been gone now for years and nothing’s replaced them…And they fell through the cracks of the Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2  administrations. This is a 28-year record of a federal government neglecting the needs of the vast majority of American citizens.  And it’s not surprising then they get bitter

Barack, do not apologize. The truth is hard to hear, especially for those who have the baggage of the past
You are right on track. You are in touch. Your words echo your experiences as a Community Organizer.

One of Ronald Regan’s first acts was to break the union, which represented the Air Line Controllers Union. Then came the regressive tax structure desired by the United States Chamber of Commerce and an alliance of other business types. This shifting oftaxes from the wealthy to the middle and lower income citizens are the dreams of the economic oligarchy toeliminate personal income taxes. Ronnie set this all in motion by saying government is not a part of the solution but most of the problem. He made us “feel good” while he gave us the biggest deficits in history.  Furthermore, he began the privatization of public functions as another means of reducing Civil Service.

The first Bush Administration was consumed by the first Iraq war and the savings and loan debacle. Taxpayers bailed them out just as we are doing today. Its Waterloo was the hurricane that hit Florida and total catastrophic response by FEMA! Does historyrepeat itself? Are the victims of the Bush Hurricane bitter?  I say yes. I say they ought to be and we should be for them.

Remember “No new taxes? Strangle the government by giving tax cuts to the wealthy but not the working classes are the same old Republican mantra. People were tired of Republican policies and ready for change.  Change seemed to present itself in theinfamous Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) with Bill Clinton being one of the rising stars in this organization. Triangulation otherwise known get anything done as long as I can get my name on it, take credit, and damn the consequences.

But what did the Clintons’ do for the middle class? NAFTA:  a Clinton legacy that has costs million of American jobs. The Clinton administration accepting the help of the Republican neocons passed NAFTA without any labor or environmental standards. Clinton, our president promised jobs, but delivered jobs to third world countries. Jobs that pay less than a living wage even by third world standards.  Are we bitter? You’re damn right we are!

As I have said many times “The worst democrat is better than the best Republican, Bill Clinton proved that.”

Clintons’ legacy of selfish and embarrassing acts led America to the Republicans who courted the religious fundamentalist to punish those lazy, tax consuming poor people, and reduce the size of government by lowering more taxes and introducing a new voter category, the “Value Voter.” These VV are the people who followed the lead of the likes of James Dodson, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell who fear of gays, abortion, and promise more jobs by voting as a bloc with the Republicans.  The culmination of the rise of neocon economic ended with the election of GWB and theascension of Tom Delay as Majority Republican Floor Leader who duped the likes of Dobson, Robertson and Falwell. Into giving the public treasury to the wealthiest, greased the outsourcing to jobs to China, all to the detriment of the economic security of those wonderful small town rural folks

Are Americans bitter?  Ask the 4000 plus parents who lost their sons and daughters to a war that George W. sent them to on a lie.

Are Americans bitter?  Ask the union household who lost their jobs as companies moved our manufacturing base overseas.

Are Americans bitter? Ask any American who faces another day without health care.

But you, Senator Obama have given us something we have lived a generation without.  Hope is real.  Change is in the air.  Young people are coming out to vote in record numbers; believing for the first time in our American electoral process.  Whites and blacks, young and old, Christian, Jew, Muslim and Atheist…. you have given us a new vision.

 Don’t apologize Senator Obama!

At 73 my first political memory was seeing Harry Truman as a child with my Dad. Truman faced criticism for his straight talk and sometimes-harsh words.  He said:

“I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.”

Keep telling the truth.  Yes we can have an America that once again offers opportunity for all. Hope is alive. Thank you.
